In the 17th century, musicians made the pilgrimage to Paris from all over Europe in search of the inspiration that they hoped to find with the great lutenists of the day. In the salons of Paris, lute music was described as a "Avantgoust de la musique du ciel" (foretaste of the music of heaven).
